Afternoon tea for carers

Afternoon tea stirs up awareness for carers

Something was brewing at a new Malmesbury independent living facility when Carer Support Wiltshire laid on afternoon tea to mark Carers Week.

The tea party at Burnham Court, run by the Abbeyfield, was one of several being held across the county this week, at locations including Bowood Hotel Spa and Golf Resort and various residential care homes.

They are all being hosted by Carer Support Wiltshire to give carers and the people they care for a break with a delicious afternoon tea.

As well as marking national Carers Week – which runs from June 12 to 18 – the teas were also highlighting our ongoing Time for Carers Appeal.  We have already reached £17,000 thanks to generous donations and grants, but we need more help to reach our £25,000 target.

The funds will be used to help some of the county’s 47,500 unpaid carers who look after loved ones, to have time for themselves, away from caring – whether that’s to take an exercise class, see friends, have a pamper session or just enjoy some quality time.

Christine Marrett, from Malmesbury, was at the event with her son Paul, 31, who she cares for. She said the appeal was a great way to raise money to help support carers.

Terrick and Di Meakin, from Trowbridge, also went along. Terrick, 84, became carer for Di, 82, following surgery she had last year. He said:

“I love photography, it is a real passion, and this would help me have a few short breaks out and about with my camera.”

Catharine Hurford, CSW Chief Executive, said the afternoon teas were the perfect way to mark Carers Week, highlight the Time for Carers appeal, and give people a treat at the same time.

She said: “Carers week is a fantastic opportunity to shine a light on carers who are often the forgotten heroes of our health and care systems, working behind the scenes supporting their loved ones, a vital cog in all our communities. Thanks too to the generous hosts of the afternoon teas and to everyone who is coming together to show their support for carers this week.”

Hosting a fundraising afternoon tea is a fun and delicious way to raise money this summer for our Time for Carers Appeal. You can find out more here.

Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign to bring caring right out into the open – recognising and celebrating the contribution carers make to families and communities throughout the UK. For more information visit
