With all that’s currently going on, it can be hard to know what to do if you have a problem in the home. Here are some tips ranging from boiler care through to keeping your car’s battery healthy during lockdown.

Boiler care and more

Whilst British Gas is only carrying out emergency appointments, i.e if you have no electricity, to no heating or hot water, their call centres can now help you with more than just emergencies. They also have some troubleshooting guides on things you may be able to fix or repair yourself. British Gas also has an online chat function you can use to ask questions, or have a look at their Covid-19 FAQ page for more.

Wessex water

As long as no one in your household is ill, Wessex Water are continuing to do any work as planned. If you or someone in your home is self-isolating, then they need to assess how urgent the work is. They might be able to reschedule, or they might be able to take additional steps to help protect colleagues. If you do experience an interruption to your water supply while you’re self-isolating and you are worried, please get in touch with Wessex Water.

You can find more information on their Coronavirus page, along with tips, FAQ’s and advice.

Housing advice

Shelter has some great advice on renting, lodging, benefits and more. Like did you know landlords have the same responsibilities for repairs during the coronavirus outbreak. They might not be able to get the problem fixed during the usual timescales but shouldn’t delay repairs unreasonably.

Shelter also has an urgent helpline, and a chat function for less urgent requests.

Eon Energy

Eligible customers can ask to be added to E.ON’s Priority Services Register to receive additional support including energy efficiency advice and access to a specialist team who can assist customers struggling to pay, as well as those who need additional support due to complex needs or circumstances. Find more information on their Coronavirus advice page.

If your energy supplier is not listed here, search for your energy company online for the best way to contact them, or to find advice or information surrounding coronavirus.

Car care

LV has produced a handy guide for taking care of your car during lockdown. As you may not be using your car as much, to keep your battery running, remember to turn your engine on while stationary and let it run until it’s up to working temperature. If you notice any warning lights or any issues with your car, some garages are still open to carry out essential work.
